Shirley and Wayne from Cottonwood, Arizona have let us know that the Greater Roadrunner eggs have hatched!
Stay tuned for more from Shirley and Wayne!
Shirley writes:
Well, here are the first pictues of the roadrunner chicks. They are probably one, maybe two, days old. There were five eggs in the nest, and all five have hatched. Their first day was very cold and wet! Temperatures dropped about 40 degrees from the record high temps earlier in the week, and it rained for two days. The adult RRs stayed near the nest and protected their chicks from the rain. Each time they left the nest, they were completely soaked. But they have been good parents so far.
One of the favorite foods of the roadrunner, so we have been told, is baby quail, unfortunately. Right now we still just have the one set of babies, but they are growing like crazy. I am having a tough time getting good picts for you, though. I'll keep trying!
